FAQ

What is Labor YIMBY?

Labor YIMBY is a non-factional, non-affiliated advocacy group within the Australian Labor Party. We are ALP members fighting for more homes. YIMBY stands for “Yes In My Backyard.”

Why does Australia need more homes?

Australia is not building enough homes to meet demand. We need roughly 1.2 million new homes by 2030, and we are on track to build fewer than half that number. This shortage is the root cause of unaffordable rents, rising homelessness, and a generation locked out of home ownership.

Why organise inside the Labor Party?

Housing policy is made at the political level: zoning laws, planning approvals, public housing investment, infrastructure funding. The Labor Party is the natural home for the YIMBY movement because our tradition of collective action, public investment, and worker power aligns with the solutions needed to fix the housing crisis.

What about neighbourhood character and heritage?

Good density is compatible with good design. We support well-designed, sustainable housing that contributes to neighbourhood amenity. We oppose the false choice between heritage protection and all new development. Most upzoning targets transport corridors and underused land.

What specific policies do you support?

We support upzoning near train stations, streamlined approvals for medium-density housing, ending exclusionary zoning, expanding public housing, funding infrastructure to unlock supply, reforming tax settings, and supporting the job growth needed to supply Australia’s housing.

Who can join Labor YIMBY?

Full membership is open to all financial members of the Australian Labor Party.

How can I get involved?

Sign up as a member, write a pro-housing resolution, or attend one of our events. The most important thing is to show up and make your voice heard. Join us.
