About
Who we are
Labor YIMBY is a non-factional, non-affiliated advocacy group within the Australian Labor Party. We are ALP members from across the country: rank-and-file branch members, delegates, staffers, and elected representatives, all united by a single conviction: Australia needs more homes, and Labor must lead the way.
Our story
The term YIMBY, short for “Yes In My Backyard”, emerged as a grassroots counter to NIMBYism (Not In My Backyard). Where NIMBYs organise to block new housing, YIMBYs organise to clear the path for it.
Labor YIMBY was founded by a group of ALP members who recognised that the housing crisis was being exacerbated by the very planning and political systems we participate in. Restrictive zoning, excessive veto points, and a political culture that rewards opposition to development have created a structural shortage of homes.
We believe the Labor Party, with its proud history of nation-building and social democratic reform, is the natural home for the YIMBY movement in Australia.
What we do
- Advocate for housing abundance policy at ALP National Conference, State Conferences, and policy forums
- Educate members and delegates on the economics of housing supply, zoning reform, and best-practice planning
- Organise within the party to build a pro-housing caucus
- Campaign for candidates and policies that commit to meaningful housing reform
- Collaborate with allied organisations in the community
Our structure
We are entirely volunteer-run and member-funded. We have no factional affiliation and we welcome members from all currents of the Labor Party.
